Owners of vehicles are faced with a variety of risks, which
can lead to personal or business financial losses. A comprehensive
insurance program will assist you in your recovery, but will
never fully compensate you for the turmoil that such a loss
can cause. By following even a few of these simple and cost
effective loss prevention tips, you can significantly reduce
your chances of suffering a loss.
Protecting yourself and your vehicle
- Practice safe driving every time your are in your vehicle
to reduce the risk of personal injury to you and your passengers
as well as any damage or injury to others.
- Make sure your vehicle is in good running condition and
mechanically fit. Keep a record of the maintenance on your
vehicle to prevent unexpected breakdowns. Do a circle check
of your vehicle every day. Keep your vehicle equipped with
a good spare tire, a jack, flares, a flashlight, a blanket
and candles in case of emergencies.
- Drive on well-lit and well-travelled roads and DO NOT pick
up hitchhikers.
- Instill a safe and courteous attitude in everyone who operates
your vehicle; this is an important step in preventing losses.
Protecting yourself from a theft loss
The following precautions will reduce the risk of the
THEFT of your vehicle and its contents:
- Always lock your vehicle and take the keys with you, even
if it is only for a few minutes.
- Never leave the engine running while your vehicle is unattended.
- Safeguard your keys - Never keep your vehicle keys house
keys or business keys on the same key ring and NEVER attach
identification tags to them. Leave only the vehicle key with
the service facility when having your vehicle serviced or
repaired.
- Personal items - cheque books, credit cards, money in ashtrays,
garage door openers, vehicle registration and parcels should
be kept out of sight. Leaving valuable items exposed to view
is an invitation to thieves.
- Parking in well-lit areas is important for your personal
safety and the safety of the personal belongings in your vehicle.
- Take a picture of your vehicle and keep it in a safe place.
This will make search and identification easier if your vehicle
is stolen. A picture will also be beneficial when settling
a claim.
- Keep your vehicle in a locked garage or protected location
when not in use.
Choose your vehicle carefully. There are many anti-theft
devices available on new vehicles- electronic immobilizers,
fuel and electrical cut off devices, anti-theft alarms systems,
steering wheel locking devices and hood locks.
